What is virtual hosting?

RTPnet provides virtual hosting for its members. Youi may register your own domain (for example, www.mygroup.org) and set it up so that it accesses your Web pages on rtpnet.org.

Requesting virtual hosting for a new domain

  • Cost: The registration fee (paid to Register.com) for the first two years of domain service is $50, after which you will be billed $25 per year by Register.com.

  • Determine the domain you want to use: If your userid on RTPnet is mygroup, you may wish to use the domain www.mygroup.org, but that isn't necessary. Your RTPnet id is limited to eight characters, but the domain is not restricted in length, so you could, for example, use www.thisisthefullnameofmygroupanization.org. The first level will be www and the last level should be .org, which is for nonprofit organizations (.com is for commercial sites).

  • Register your domain: Go to http://www.deltaforcedomains.com to check name availability and register your domain. Note that you must use a credit card and the billing contact information must be the same as the credit card holder information. You will need to create a User Name and Password (make sure you write them down). You will need to specify the name and address of your organization (the owner of the domain name) and the name and address of the administrative contact. Providing payment information is the last step. Again, make sure the billing information provided matches the credit card you are using !!!

Please be sure to use http://www.deltaforcedomains.com to register your domain. When you register with Deltaforce, your site is registered with Register.com and Register.com will handle future billing.

    Cautions:
    (1) All communication from Register.com to you will be by email and will look like they came from Deltaforce.net. Use an email address that is unlikely to change; do not use an email address at the domain you are registering (if there are problems with your domain, you won't get the e-mail).
    (2) Make a note of when the domain will expire and be sure to renew before then or you might lose your domain.

  • Notification:You will be notified by email when the hosting service is complete. Please allow five workdays, although RTPnet will try to process your request quickly.

When you have been notified, test your new URL and send an email message to an id at your new domain to make sure that it forwards properly.

Renewal
Bills for renewing registration will be sent from Deltaforce.net through email to the contacts. If you receive a bill from any other organization or notification that your domain will expire, please forward the message to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Register.com will notify the billing and admin contacts a few times before the registration is to expire and then, if you opted for the Safe-Renew option, they will charge the credit card that is on record for another one-year renewal.

The procedure for renewing is as follows:

  1. Go to http://www.deltaforcedomains.com.
  2. Log in with your ID and password.
  3. Click My Info on the left, enter CC details, and save.
  4. Click domain Names on the left.
  5. Click on the link in the main page.
  6. Click on the domain name.
  7. Click on the Add Years Button at the top, and follow the instructions.

The importance of registering with Deltaforce
There are other companies that register domains, and many are less expensive. But you get what you pay for. Some do not notify their customers when the registration expires and you may lose your domain. Register.com will notify you when you need to renew your domain.

Also note that some companies are sending expiration notices to non customers in an attempt to get people to transfer registration.
