Librarian

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Duke University Medical Center Library is seeking applications from
librarians who are interested in working in a progressive and dynamic
environment. The Collections Development and Electronic Resources Librarian
coordinates the evaluation, selection, and acquisition of the Library's
print and electronic book collections, bibliographic databases, electronic
knowledge resources, and audiovisual materials. This is an opportunity for
a new or experienced librarian to become actively involved in a variety of
innovative programs in an academic medical center library that serves a
nationally recognized medical school and hospital. This position provides
an experienced librarian an environment conducive to continued professional
growth. Mentoring, guidance and training will be offered to librarians with
less experience to help expand their knowledge and skills. While library
experience is desirable, the Medical Center Library is looking for the
right mix of skills, knowledge, and characteristics including flexibility,
willingness to learn and try new approaches, enthusiasm for the profession,
creativity, and a broad vision of the future of academic health libraries.

GENERAL DUTIES

Works collaboratively with committees and staff teams in identifying high
quality materials needed to meet user needs.

Develops and maintains a network of contacts among Duke libraries, faculty
and vendors.

Maintains an in-depth knowledge of Duke Medical Center's educational,
clinical, and research activities for use in setting collection development
priorities.

Keeps abreast of trends and issues related to electronic resources. Chairs
the Library's Electronic
Resources Committee.

Coordinates review of licenses for all materials and maintains database and
files on each contract and license. Participates and provides input on
license negotiations.

Notifies Acquisitions Manager of selection decisions and ensures materials
are purchased in a cost effective and timely manner.

Designs and implements a new monograph selection process. Works with book
jobbers to develop effective approval plans. Collaborates with Reference
Collection Development Coordinator.

Works with the Head of the Journals Department on journal collection issues
and serves on the Library's Journal Review Committee.

Maintains departmental policies and procedures including a comprehensive
and up to date collection development policy. Coordinates policies and
procedures with Cataloging on the cataloging of electronic and Internet
resources. Identifies ways to streamline review, selection, ordering and
processing procedures.

Effectively allocates collections budgets for print and electronic books,
database, and electronic knowledge resources; and monitors expenditures on
an ongoing basis. Participates in budget development and decisions
regarding funding for electronic resources and print materials.

Prepares statistical reports related to collection development activity.

Accepts, acknowledges receipt of, and processes gifts of books. Coordinates
weeding of the monograph and audiovisual collections. Participates in
planning for transfer of print materials to the Library Service Center.

Participates in the Library's Web Advisory Committee and works with
Webmasters on the listing, display, and access to electronic and Web-based
resources.

Serves on the Library Council and the Management Team. Participates in
Library wide short and long range planning, policy and procedure
formulation, and budget planning.

Represents the Library externally on matters related to collection
development.

Provides reference coverage at the Library Service Desk on a limited basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master's degree in Library and Information Science or advanced
degree in other relevant field.

EXPERIENCE

Required: A combination of previous experience in collection development,
management of electronic resources, license negotiation, reference work,
committee leadership, and project management. Library fieldwork or library
internships are acceptable.

Preferred: Work experience in a health sciences information environment
and/or direct experience in two or more of the required skills.

SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE

Required: Understanding of collection development principles,
customer-service orientation, excellent organizational and communication
skills, ability to work effectively with a diverse staff and clientele,
ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment,
initiative to acquire new skills, flexibility in managing multiple
assignments, and the ability to set priorities and lead projects.

Preferred: Knowledge of health sciences information resources or health
science related disciplines, awareness of issues and trends in academic
health sciences libraries, knowledge of licensing and copyright principles,
automated library systems, Web technology, and use of bibliographic
utilities.

SALARY

Salary and rank are dependent on qualifications and experience. Minimums
are $36,850 for Assistant Librarian; $39,350 for Senior Assistant
Librarian; $42,700 for Associate Librarian; and $48,800 for Librarian.
