On June 24th, The Manuscripts Department of the University of North
Carolina
at Chapel Hill will host "Managing Audio-Visual Archival Collections," a
workshop sponsored by the North Carolina State Historical Records Advisory
Board and the Society of North Carolina Archivists. This half day workshop,
which is funded by the National Historical Publications and Records
Commission,
will discuss the nature of audio and magnetic image recording formats and
current standards for the care and storage of these media. This workshop
will be taught by Steve Weiss, Curator of the Southern Folklife Collection
at UNC-Chapel Hill, who has had extensive experience addressing the
particular
needs and problems posed by these types of important and fragile historical
records. This workshop will include a guided tour of the Manuscripts
Department's
state of the art audio preservation facilities.

An essential goal of this archival education project is to bring archival
education to the places in North Carolina where it is needed. Fortunately,
Chapel Hill offers us a central location, a number of very active public
historians and archivists, and a fantastic venue at UNC's Wilson Library.

The fee for this workshop is $20.00. The workshop will be held from 1 to
5 pm in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room, Wilson Library, University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Space is limited and registration is
required.
If you are interested in attending this workshop, please contact Matthew
Turi, Project Archivist at the NC State Historical Records Advisory Board,
via email at matt.turi at ncmail.net or at (919) 416-1698.
