POSITION: Information and Education Services Librarian

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Duke University Medical Center Library seeks applications for an entry
level Assistant Librarian to work in a dynamic academic health sciences
library that serves a nationally recognized medical school and medical
center. Candidates must demonstrate adaptability to change, confidence in
a fast paced, innovative organization, a willingness to learn and
implement new approaches to library services, enthusiasm for the
profession, creativity in the use of information technology, and a broad
vision of the future of academic medical libraries. Experience in library
education services, web page and online tutorial development, and project
management is beneficial, but not required. Recent graduates with a
Master's degree in Library or Information Science are strongly encouraged
to apply.
The Information & Education Services Librarian is responsible for
supporting the application of evidence based practice in the Duke
University Medical Center; developing and teaching information management
instructional programs; applying web based technology to the delivery of
services, participating in library strategic planning; providing
leadership on special projects; and assisting patrons in locating accurate
and timely information in support of quality clinical care, biomedical
research, and health sciences education.
GENERAL DUTIES:
These percentages are not exact, but will vary according to priorities,
special initiatives, and the particular aptitudes of the selected
candidate.
Education and Instruction 40%
· Promotes and supports Medical Center department applications of
evidence-based practice in clinical, research and educational settings.
· Works with Medical Center departments on specialized information projects
and services.
· Develops customized approaches for information, education, and training.
· Teaches and develops classes for information management and library
resources.
· Provides library tours and orientation sessions.
Web Pages and Online Tutorials 30%
· Creates and maintains web page content and links, primarily for
Information and Education Services.
· Develops and updates interactive online tutorials for databases and
information technology.
· Specializes in specific information management resources.
· Provides recommendations for the design, organization, and content of the
Library web site.
Leadership and Project Management 20%
· Provides leadership by coordinating Medical Center Library projects and
initiatives.
· Actively participates in the Library's management team, committees, and
task forces.
· Represents the library on campus committees and task forces.
· Serves as a liaison to other departments in the Medical Center.
· Represents the Library in professional library associations, consortiums,
and networks.
· Participates in goal setting for the Information and Education Services
department and Library.
· Approaches projects and planning with a broad vision of library services
and considers innovative and alternative approaches to traditional
services and resources.
Reference Service and Other Assignments 10%
· Provides on-call reference and information services in the library.
· Offers in-depth information consultations in the library and Medical
Center departments.
· Answers information and education questions via phone, email, and other
communication media.
· Performs mediated database and Internet searches.
· Recommends materials for the Library's reference and circulating
collections.
· Evaluates and recommends electronic resources.
· Provides backup for other library service units.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Required: Master's degree in Library or Information Science.
Experience:
Required: Knowledge of library instruction and education services, information
and reference services, database searching strategies, web pages and
online tutorials, and project management.
Preferred: Work experience in a health sciences information environment, and/or
direct experience in two or more of the required skills, including
library field work or internships.
Specific Skills and Knowledge:
Required: Customer-service orientation; excellent organizational and communication
skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele; ability to
work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment;
initiative to acquire new skills; flexibility with assignments; ability to
set priorities and lead projects; and knowledge of principles for
searching and evaluating electronic resources.
Preferred: Knowledge of health sciences information resources, familiarity with
health sciences disciplines; and a broad understanding of trends in
academic medical libraries.
Salary:
Salary dependent on qualifications and experience, minimum $37,863.
