Archives Librarian

General Description
The Duke University Medical Center Library & Archives seeks applications
for an entry-level Librarian position to work in a dynamic academic health
sciences environment serving a nationally recognized medical school and
medical center. Candidates must demonstrate confidence and adaptability in
a fast paced and innovative organization, a willingness to learn and
implement new approaches to library services, enthusiasm for the
profession, creativity in the use of information technology, and a broad
vision of the future of academic archives and medical libraries. The Duke
University Medical Center (DUMC) Archives acquires, preserves, and makes
accessible Medical Center records with permanent historical and research
value. The Research, Outreach, and Education Librarian provides access to
and promotes the use of these materials. Experience in archival research,
research methodology, and bibliographic utilities is required. Web page
creation, online exhibition development, project management skills, and
education services skills are preferred. Recent graduates with a Master’s
degree in Library or Information Science are strongly encouraged to apply.
General Duties
These percentages are not exact, but will vary according to priorities,
special initiatives, and the particular aptitudes of the selected
candidate.
Research (40%)
· Provides in-person and remote reference services for Archives users
and assists researchers;
· Creates bibliographies relating to medical education, research, and
practice; updates such bibliographies previously produced by Archives
staff;
· Recognizes and restricts confidential information according to FERPA,
HIPAA, and University policies on access to records.
Outreach (20%)
· Performs outreach activities on behalf of the Archives;
· Coordinates and manages the publication of the Archives’ newsletter;
· Plans, prepares, and publicizes exhibits featuring Archives’
holdings;
· Plans, organizes, and promotes Archives-related public programming;
Instruction (20%)
· Promotes use and understanding of the Archives’ holdings for teaching
and research at Duke;
· Provides bibliographic instruction for medical history materials;
· Prepares displays for special meetings and classes;
· Assists the director in building relationships with Duke faculty and
encourages the use of collections by Duke students.
Technical Services (10%)
· Under the direction of the Technical Services Coordinator, processes,
encodes, and catalogs Archives’ collections;
· Screens collections for materials restricted under University, State,
or Federal Policies;
· Contributes to Archives website; conducts research to add value to
site content.
Library Services (10%)
· Contributes to other Medical Center Library activities and projects
as appropriate, including service on committees and task forces and shifts
at the Library Service Desk.
Qualifications
Education
Master's degree in Library or Information Science or Information Science
and/or advanced degree in appropriate subject field.
Experience
Required: Experience conducting research in an archives environment; use of
archives research methodology; use of bibliographic utilities such as
collection-level MARC records; use of EAD finding aids; familiarity with
standard archival and library procedures.
Preferred: Work experience in an archives/manuscript environment and/or
direct experience in two or more of the required skills, including archival
field work or internships, Web page creation and online exhibitions, and
project management.
Specific Skills/Knowledge
Required: Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in medical history;
ability to work effectively in a team environment; ability to lift 40
pounds; ability to work in an environment in which exposure to materials
containing dust and mold is possible; and ability to communicate
effectively with users and donors.
Preferred: Knowledge of health sciences information resources, familiarity
with health sciences disciplines, and a broad understanding of trends in
academic medical libraries.
Salary
Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Minimum: $37,863.
