The NLM recently released an announcement about 42, proposed, MEDLINE 
subheading deletions.  According to the announcement, "The National 
Library of Medicine (NLM) has developed a restructuring of  subheadings 
(qualifiers) within the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) vocabulary. The 
new, streamlined list of 42 replaces the existing complement of 83
topical 
qualifiers."   Comments on the proposed changes must be directed to
Stuart 
J. Nelson, MD, Head, Medical Subject Headings Section, NLM before April 
10, 2006 [nelsonst at mail.nih.gov]. 

I've reviewed the changes and am ALARMED.  If the proposed changes are 
implemented, my job will become much more difficult, and  I'm not 
convinced that the changes will make MEDLINE searching any easier for my

patrons.

Since several listservs don't allow distribution of attachments, I've 
placed the document containing the NLM announcement and the document 
containing the list of proposed, subheading deletions (with proposed 
mapping) on our web server.  You can download the documents at:

The list of proposed changes is long, and I know some of you are very
