Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Team
Access Services Department 
Duke University Medical Center Library
Paraprofessional/Bi-weekly Position


The Duke University Medical Center Library is seeking an energetic, 
customer oriented person to work on a fast paced interlibrary loan and 
document delivery team in the Access Services Department.  Duke University 
Hospital and the Duke University School of Medicine are ranked among the 
top 10 academic medical institutions in the United States.  The Medical 
Center Library is a member of the National Network of Medical Libraries. 
This position is responsible for processing interlibrary loan and document 
requests for external customers such as medical, academic, public, and 
special libraries; research institutions; health care professionals, and 
the general public.  Also processes requests for Duke faculty, staff, and 
students.  Other duties include providing circulation and basic reference 
service; performing stacks maintenance; and participating in library wide 
projects. 

Work Schedule 

Sundays   1:45 PM – 10:15 PM
Monday – Thursday   2:45 PM – 11:15 PM

Salary   $11.35 an hour

Major Duties

Imports interlibrary loan requests from DOCLINE and OCLC.

Reviews requests for complete citation information.

Verifies holdings in library on-line catalog. 

Sorts requests by priority. 

Pulls material from stacks. 

Scans and photocopies material.

Deliver requests via Ariel, PDF email, fax and mail.

Updates completed requests in interlibrary loan system.

Maintains records of loaned books. 

Sends overdue notices for late books. 

Responds to customer questions regarding ILL and document delivery 
service.

Resolves problems with requests in consultation with Document Delivery/LL 
Manager. 

Other Duties

Provides circulation and basic reference service.
 
Reports equipment and facility problems.

Responds to security and building alarms.

Shelves books, journals, and audiovisual materials. 

Shelf reads assigned areas of collection for shelving accuracy. 

Participates in stack shifts and moving of collections.

Patrols the Library stacks and public seating, assisting patrons needing 
assistance.

Inspects library material and refers damaged items to appropriate staff. 

Opens and closes the Library as assigned.

Empties book drops and delivers mail.

Qualifications 

Education

   Required: High school diploma 

   Preferred: College degree or other post-secondary education 

Experience/Specific Skills/Knowledge

   Required: Must be dependable, detail-oriented, and organized; able to 
work 
   independently and with others; experience using Internet search 
engines; good written 
   and verbal communication skills, experience with word processing and 
email; ability 
   to lift at least 20 pounds and push a fully loaded book cart.

   Preferred: Experience with interlibrary loan and document delivery 
computer system; 
   experience using on-line library catalogs; work experience in a 
medical, academic, 
   special, public, or school library; experience with electronic delivery 
of information 
   content or delivery of digital products such as electronic databases, 
ebooks, and
    ejournals; experience scanning text and transmitting scanned articles; 
customer service 
   experience.
