Duke University Medical Center Library is seeking a dynamic and
service-oriented librarian for the position of Biomedical Research Liaison
Librarian. This position is responsible for supporting translational,
clinical and basic sciences research at Duke University Medical Center and
Duke Health System through expert literature searching; applying web-based
technology to the delivery of services; developing and teaching
information management instructional programs; participating in library
strategic planning; providing leadership on special projects; and
assisting patrons in locating accurate and timely information in support
of biomedical informatics and research, quality clinical care, and health
sciences education.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Cultivate relationships with research faculty and programs and identify
opportunities for the Library to partner with groups to support their
information needs.
Provide proactive expert searching and reference services to support
translational research, clinical care, and health sciences education.
Develop and implement a plan to address the needs of researchers through
instruction, consultation, and Web-based information access tools.
Develop and promote new and innovative information services to the Duke
Medicine research community.
Develop customized approaches for information education and training.
Offer in-depth information consultations.
Create and maintains Web page content and links, primarily for Public
Services.
Develop and update interactive online tutorials for information education
and training.
Specialize in and promote the use of information management resources.
Provide leadership by coordinating Medical Center Library projects and
initiatives.
Actively participate in Library committees and task forces.
Represent the Library on campus committees and task forces.
Represent the Library in professional library associations, consortiums,
and networks.
Participate in goal setting for the Public Services department and
Library.
Approach projects and planning with a broad vision of library services and
consider innovative and alternative approaches to traditional services and
resources.
Perform all tasks according to established policies, procedures,
standards, guidelines, and expectations.
Demonstrate desirable work skills as described in the PEP Behavior
Guidelines for Customer Focus, Teamwork, Creative Problem-Solving,
Continuous Learning, and Diversity.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Master’s degree in Library or Information Science or in a biomedical
sciences discipline and knowledge of database searching strategies,
library instruction and education services, information and reference
services, Web pages and online tutorials, and project management.
Customer-service orientation; excellent organizational and communication
skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse clientele; ability to
work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment;
initiative to acquire new skills; flexibility with assignments; ability to
set priorities and lead projects; and knowledge of principles for
searching and evaluating electronic resources. Computer skills: Working
knowledge of MS Office programs.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate coursework in a basic or health
sciences area such as Chemistry, Biology or Public Health. Work experience
in a health sciences information environment (including library field work
or internships). Demonstrated experience in two or more of the knowledge
areas listed above.
Knowledge of health sciences information resources, familiarity with
health sciences disciplines; and a broad understanding of trends in
academic medical libraries. Computer skills: Graphics and Web authoring
software, citation management programs such as EndNote, RefWorks, or
Zotero.
