Laupus Library, East Carolina University (ECU) seeks a dynamic, energetic,
knowledgeable and self-motivated librarian to provide leadership in
collection services, metadata, and resource discovery activities. The
Collection Services and Metadata Librarian supervises Collection Services
department staff, including the Serials and Collection Development
Coordinators. This position also liaises with the History Collections
department of Laupus Health Sciences Library and the library-managed
Country Doctor Museum to provide insight and direction for expanding
digital collections activities and metadata application practices. ****
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Collections. ****
*Duties:*
**· **Supervises and provides direction for Collection Services
staff in the acquisition, receipt, and processing of monographic print,
electronic and serials collections, including management of physical
collections. Supervises and evaluates departmental staff workflows. ****
**· **Responsible for the management and assessment of the
library's collection in all formats including but not limited to serials,
monographs, databases and audiovisual materials. ****
**· **Serves as a liaison to the History Collections and Country
Doctor Museum collections in regards to digitization of materials working
in conjunction with Joyner Library's Digital Collections staff. ****
**· **Serves as the Laupus representative for Collection Services
functions and operations in support of the resources and services provided
by the ECU Libraries. Collaborates and participates in decision making with
counterparts from the Joyner Library Collections & Technical Services
department in support of shared collections and resource initiatives. ****
**· **Represents Laupus at external committees where appropriate,
especially those related to management of ECU Libraries' resources. ****
**· **Applies medically specific cataloging standards including
MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) and NLM (National Library of Medicine)
classification schemes in all areas of metadata application. ****
**· **Coordinates the selection of approval and firm orders amongst
Laupus librarians. Liaises with the library's approval plan provider and
contract cataloging vendor to ensure quality control. ****
**· **Determines innovative practices related to approval, firm,
and standing orders. ****
**· **Provides original cataloging as needed. Performs complex copy
cataloging and quality control audits of fully-shelf ready materials. ****
**· **Oversees and monitors authority control. ****
**· **Thoroughly understands and exploits the cataloging module of
the integrated library system, its relation to other discovery systems and
considers its effects on users in determining procedures related to
discovery. ****
**· **Maintains knowledge of and compliance with national
bibliographic cataloging practices and appropriate metadata standards
(particularly MESH, RDA, FRBR) and develops and implements best practices
in these areas. ****
**· **Fosters a work environment of productivity, assessment based
planning, and user centered practices. ****
**· **Maintains essential records and statistics and prepares
reports as needed. ****
**· **Assists in staffing the Reference desk. ****
**· **Additional responsibilities may be assigned by supervisor. ***

Cataloging experience in a library-work environment, preferably academic
and/or health sciences setting. Experience with content standards RDA,
AACR2 and with FRBR concepts. Demonstrated working knowledge of MESH and
NLM standards. Demonstrated understanding of digital collections and the
tools used to work with them. ****
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, oral, and
written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with
faculty, staff and users.****
*Minimum Qualifications: *ALA-accredited master's degree or international
equivalent in library or information science. Demonstrated training or
experience working in cataloging/metadata. Demonstrated understanding of
metadata principles and practices, such as those found in AACR2, RDA,
Dublin Core and other emerging metadata schemes. Demonstrated experience
working within a large, widely-used Integrated Library System (ILS)
platform, such as Symphony. Awareness of current issues and trends in
metadata development. Demonstrated potential to be an effective supervisor.*

*Terms of Employment: *Initial appointment is a one (1) year fixed-term
contract; subsequent renewal may be fixed-term or tenure track depending
upon successful completion of the initial first year contract. The minimum
salary is $50,000. ECU offers an excellent benefits package.**
