[Chaos-l] Green lasers

MessageI am glad that you are buying up green lasers so that irresponsible people won't be able to get their hands on them. Maybe I can get the Hunt brothers interested in doing this on a massive scale (did they try to do this with ketchup or some other commodity? I can't remember). At any rate, I am glad that green lasers have woken up the sleeping giant of the CHAOS listserve. Walter

For Christmas I got the same green laser the guy in the story used (Bigha). I can honestly say that it is more powerful than I expected and is definitely not a toy. It works great for pointing things out in the sky, but I would be surprised if these devices remain generally available due to the potential for abuse. I am ordering another one just in case.

There is often more to the story than what is initially reported. I am sure that green lasers can be owned and used responsibly and guns probably can too. I'm less sure about certain GOTO scopes (but of course I don't have one of THOSE either). Walter

From what I read, the guy lit up a plane. Then when a helicopter flew over to investigate, he lit that up to. Feds arrived at his house and he lied about it. Then he blamed it on his daughter. Then he finally confessed.

Yes, gun control is needed if you want to hit the target. I'm always in control of my guns. J

As a green laser pointer-less amateur astronomer, I have to say that I can see the Feds' point. There certainly are risks to people on the ground as well as to pilots and air travellers and all too often those who wield the laser pointers are little kids. Maybe it's just me - and yes, I favor gun control too. Walter

I received this over another listserve.-- Stewart

"I just saw where the person arrested with the green laser light is an amateur astronomer, who apparently was showing his daughter some constellations and pointing out various night sky objects, when an airplane crossed the path. The Feds busted down his door, and handcuffed him, and subjected him to an intense grilling, and he will be charged with three felony counts. I am sure that most of them couldn't tell Orion from mascara. This will be interesting as it evolves-Feds Vs. Amateur astronomers! I think that an accomodation will have to be made, otherwise, we will all be felons, and our green laser lights will be confiscated. I use my pointer frequently, as I am sure many of you do. What to do, what to do. Stay tuned. (;-)) Ron"
