Everyone,
I've learned recently that John Dobson (yes, *THAT* Dobson ... the one that
invented the Dobsonian telescope mount) will be giving a lecture at the
Morehead Planetarium in the Star Theater next Monday (February 7th) at 7:00
PM. The lecture is free, and no reservations are needed ... they will
just let in as many people as the room will hold.
If you are interested in listening to one of the men that has made
astronomy part of the everyday man's life, please come!
Robert Nielsen
Here is the information about the talk from the Morehead Planetarium's website:
John Dobson visits on Feb. 7!
At age 89, John Dobson is a distinctive character who has earned the
nicknames "Star Monk" and "the Pied Piper of Astronomy" for his influence
on amateur astronomy.
Dobson will speak at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill
on Monday, Feb. 7. His presentation, "The Recycling Universe," begins at 7
p.m. in the Center's Star Theater.
A former monk in the Ramakrishna Order, Dobson is the founder of the
<http://www.sidewalkastronomers.com>Sidewalk Astronomers, a group of
amateur astronomers who host public viewing sessions, informal sidewalk
stargazing opportunities and other events.
With his lanky build and long white ponytail, he is a familiar sight on San
Francisco street corners, where he positions homemade telescopes on street
corners and invites passersby to peer at the stars and planets above them.
Dobson also teaches others to build their own telescopes, using a mount he
invented. He speaks throughout the country on cosmology and philosophy and
has been featured on PBS and The Tonight Show and in numerous national
publications.
Dobson's presentation at the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is
part of the Center's popular Speaking of Science Series. Reservations are
not required for this event, but seating is limited.
