Sorry these are so late. Dr. Steffen Bass of the Duke Physics Dept. was the speaker at the June CHAOS meeting and there was a good crowd of about 20 people including some new faces. Dr. Bass is a theoretician interested in the first few milliseconds after the Big Bang and he's involved in a project in which heavy atom nuclei are squashed together forming a shortlived superdense particle whose decay can be detected and analyzed. It's the closest anyone has ever come to recreating the "primordial soup" of the universe. And he only showed a few complicated equations! The talk ended with speculation about miniature black holes forming right here on earth but Dr. Bass assured us that this was merely speculation. Thanks, Dr. Bass! Walter
