At the Sept. CHAOS meeting earlier this week, Matt Fleenor spoke about his research project involving the distribution of galaxies and other matter in the universe. His main contribution is supplying actual images of a particular part of the sky together with spectral data indicating the three-dimensional distribution of galaxies in that volume. Computer modellers can test their theories against this "real data set." Matt is finishing up his PhD at UNC and we wish him the best. We also discussed the recent discovery of "the farthest object ever detected in the universe" by a team including Dr. Dan Reichart of UNC and UNC student Joshua Haislip. Is this area becoming the center of the astroscience universe (or at least solar system)? We'll try to get these guys to come talk us about this hot discovery in the near future. You'll hear about it first at CHAOS meetings! Please E-mail Robert Nielsen if you are interested in helping with the outreach observing session at Oval Park in Durham this coming Sat. night. Walter
