Closest approach should be around 11 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, but Clear Sky Clock does not look promising. If by chance we get lucky, this will be a "do not miss" event. Thanks Mark for posting the reminder.

I wanted to pass this along from Sky and Telescope:
Comet to Cross Ring Nebula Sunday
May 5, 2006 | Amateur astronomers everywhere have been following the double comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, well up in the east in late evening. Its two largest pieces are currently 7th or 8th magnitude — not as bright as was hoped, but still visible with good binoculars through a not-too-badly light-polluted sky. On Sunday night, May 7th, the comet's brightest piece will pass right across the famous Ring Nebula in Lyra! Don't miss this event. . . .
Greg Dillon and I had the opportunity to look at Comet 73P this past weekend and it is remarkably beautiful. We saw fragments B & C.
I can't wait to observe next month with CHAOS.
mark
