Hi All,
First of all, I would like to thank all of those who came to the skywatching session. We had a record number of people and there is absolutely no way I could have done it without you.
Now for the question:
I am on the UNC-CH Gamma Ray Burst research team and work with the PROMPT telescopes which are located at CTIO. As you know, I also work at the Morehead Planetarium. As a result, I try to bridge the gap between education and research. We are currently developing a program called OBSERVE which will allow highschool students across the state to access the PROMPT telescopes, and other telescopes around the world to take images and carry out projects. Some of these projects include taking pictures of planets. The problem is that out Apogee Alta CCDs saturate when imaging Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn even at the shortest exposure length (.01 sec).
I am looking for some neutral density color filters which will allow us to image the planets. Any suggestions on which filters to buy? What opacity would you recommend?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
-Josh
