My father, a ham (amateur radio operator) at the time, did hear the beep, beep, beep. I recall his recollections of tuning in and listening to the telemetry as the satellite passed overhead. I wish I could recollect where he said he was, because he also told of being interviewed by the local commercial broadcast radio station.
