This was before my time, but my earliest memory of the
event is my father telling me and my brother how he
was up all night in India listening to the live radio
broadcast of this event. I emailed my dad this
listserv session, and asked him for his memories, and
here is his response:

Quote
I was up all night in Bombay, listening to the Radio
of the momentous event, as it was unfolding. Bombay
is ten and a half hours ahead of Eastern Time. Shail,
my elder son, was just about a year old and yet he
remembers being awake part of the time.. We were
staying next to my in-laws place and my younger
brother in-law was with us, listening to the Radio.
All others had gone to sleep. I was very much excited
and was actually imagining the way the Astronauts were
feeling at that moment. I then heard the announcement
of them being on the other side of the moon, and were
out of Radio contact. About half an hour later, they
were again in Radio contact. I remember President
Nixon announcing it as a national holiday.

Yes, I was thrilled by the technological advances.
The next day, there was a Billboard in Bombay showing
the Maharajah, the mascot of Air India (the official
Airlines of India) shown standing on the surface of
the moon, bowing and greeting the Astronaut with the
words 'Neil Armstrong, I presume!'.
Unquote

Having been born a couple of years after this event, I
was raised with knowledge that we had already been to
the moon. But what an experience for all of those who
can remember this event as it unfolded!!
