I ran across a *free* observing book that is available online and I
recommend it to everyone interested in astronomy. The title is "What's Up
2007: 365 Days of Skywatching". The author is Tammy Plotner and the book has
received some excellent reviews from knowledgeable folks. The book is over
400 pages and lists observing targets for every day of the year, along with
some interesting historical and scientific facts about the objects and
astronomy in general. The range of observing targets is from naked eye to
larger scope challenges and is based on what is visible when most people
have the time to observe -- after dinner but before bedtime.

As an example, on days when the moon is up, she lists interesting lunar
targets (with maps) along with the target geological origins and other
scientific information. For this day, she also lists interesting double
stars, carbon stars or other unusual stars that are visible. For each day
she also lists any meteor showers, occultations, planetary alignments or
other interesting events for the evening.

I find the book fascinating and I am certain it will appeal to all levels of
observers, including armchair observers. I am not sure why it is *free*, but
it is the astro book deal of the year. You can download it at:
