Hi,
  I agree with going for the 8" if you are willing to pay some extra  
cash because you will have brighter images.  I initially stuck with  
the 6" recommendation based on your price, but a small jump in  
aperture from 6-8 is a big difference in light gathering.  "Buy as  
much aperture as you can carry."  Remember this would be a starter  
scope so consider how convenient it is for you to haul around.
Consider stopping by Big Bang Astro and see how heavy you think each  
scope is.  They have a store in Raleigh (I do not own or work for Big  
Bang- just support them).
