Steve and I made it to the dark site last night. We arrived around 9:30 and
were greeted by the Currins and their two dogs. The sky was somewhat hazy
but improved as the night went on.
A stiff haze moved in around midnight, followed by a dry wind and about an
hour of good seeing. We saw Jupiter, M13, M92, Ring Nebula, Swan Nebula,
Dumbell Nebula, Andromeda, M15, M2, M71, several objects in Cassiopeia
(including ET!), and some others I'm forgetting.
While viewing the Swan Nebula early in the evening, a satellite of some sort
passed through my view moving east at a swift clip. I followed it for about
a minute and then did a quick pass of the scope to Steve so he could see it.
Total travel time across the sky couldn't have been more than about 3
minutes.
We saw a number of meteors as well, mostly Perseids. None were particularly
spectacular, but it was an exciting prelude to the show tonight!
This was my first time to the dark site, and I look forward to the next. Much
appreciation is due the Currins. They were exceptionally friendly, their
land is a great place to view, and it's incredibly generous of them to let us
use it.
I look forward to seeing many of you tonight at Jordan Lake.
Michael
