Jayme (and everyone else),
Sounds good to me (sorry I haven't responded earlier) ... although setting a *single* night is usually asking for trouble. I would suggest either Thursday or Friday night (with Friday being the rain "make up" day).

This would be a good night. The moon is waning and will rise well after we are gone. How does everyone feel about Thursday January 3rd?

Sorry I was mistaken about the full moon. It is not (only about a quarter). So how would Thursday Jan.3 work?

We would love to help you learn to enjoy your telescope. Bring them along. So, when is the star date?

Thanks for the suggestions, Bobi. I think identifying constellations is a nice addition. Any day that week is OK with me, so let's plan for an evening that is most convenient for you and the other CHAOS members.
Several people have expressed an interest in this, including several Bynum residents and some folks from Fearington. I can also notify Northwood High School which is only a couple of miles away to attract some students. I think there will be a good turnout.
A few folks (including me) have telescopes but have never used them. Would you and the other CHAOS members be willing to help the novices?
Larry

Hi Larry -
Sounds like a very cool idea. I would suggest some evening from Wednesday,
January 2 through the following Sunday. On a week day, I could get there
around 7 p.m., earlier on Saturday or Sunday. My telescope is not the
biggest (120mm), but it gets some objects rather nicely. Plus we could
identify constellations naked eye, if folks would like.

Thanks to all who expressed some interest in this. If you would like to
proceed, please contact me. I am open to any suggestions. I can also
handle publicity. I am sure we can have a good turnout.

Hi all. Sorry to take so long to respond regarding this. In an e-
mail to me, Mr. Crum proposed:
[...] The Bynum bridge is quite dark, access is very easy, and
would provide a really dramatic setting from which to view the
stars. I also think there would be a good turnout of curious
adults and students.
If this idea sounds like something your group would be interested
in, please reply and let me know. Then we could work out the details.
Robert Nielsen noted:
I'll be happy to talk to him ... although setting up telescopes on
a bridge (with all the vibrations) could be bad
and Christopher Breivogel added:
I've observed from that bridge with my scope, and it's not bad.
You can park nearby, but have to carry your stuff a little way out
onto the bridge to get clear of the trees on the banks of the
river. It's pretty dark, too, but by no means perfect.
Then Bobi Gallagher chipped in:
I drove down there today to see the bridge in daylight. Looks like
a neat observing place. So I am very interested in Larry Crum's
request. Please let me know if I should contact Larry, or if you
want to do something more organized.
The consensus is that this would be an interesting place to try
observing at least once, and several people wished to contact Mr.
Crum to work on specifics.
Regrettably, i won't have time be able to help on this, but everyone
who expressed interest is on the recipient list of this e-mail.
Best of luck.
J.
