Dennis Hands, a former high school teacher and current Greensboro
representative of the *International Dark Sky* *Association (IDA)*, was the
speaker at the October CHAOS meeting which was attended by CHAOS members,
RAC members and Carol Woods residents as well as other citizens interested
in preserving the environment. Dennis pointed out that *limiting "light
pollution"* is important in disparate areas such as wildlife protection,
crime prevention and traffic safety as well as for amateur astronomy. He
also reminded us that we are the only ones who can start to educate the
public and pressure the politicians to pass the *lighting ordinances
that will be required* to improve and preserve the nighttime skies in all
their potential glory.
Dennis is an accomplished grassroots organizer but says that *citizens
of each geographic region must work* *on projects of local interest such as
this* and not expect IDA the national organization or national politicians
to solve the problem for them. CHAOS and Morehead Planetarium are two local
organizations that need to lead the way - individual members need to start
to think about how they can contribute to this worthwhile cause! I'm sure
we'll be talking more about this among ourselves and at future meetings. In
fact, the *Nov. CHAOS meeting will be on Nov. 11 at* *Morehead Planetarium
at 7 pm* with other area clubs also invited. The topic will be plans for *2009
- the International* *Year of Astronomy*. What better time to make plans
for protecting and appreciating the night sky. Walter Fowler
