Robert, I completely agree. I love being out in the dark and cold
-particularly with families swarming - exploring the universe beyond
their own backyard.
So let me take this opportunity to attach the list we passed out at
November's meeting - still a rough draft - but what Morehead has in mind
for next year. The RAC folks have contacted me (particularly Michael
Keefe) about championing a "Telescope Amnesty." They would like CHAOS to
join in on this as well. If anyone thinks that helping folks bring life
to telescopes that have been masquerading as clothes racks sounds like a
worthwhile project, I'll be happy to put you in touch with Michael.
In case you haven't heard, IYA has released a list of monthly themes,
each with activities and a featured observing object. January's theme is
"Telescopes and Space Probes: Today's Starry Messengers." All the themes
can be found at http://www.astrosociety.org/iya/guides.html
I have just sent a message to the Astronomy Days folks asking if they
know what other IYA activities or connections are being made at the event.
It would be great to have an idea that we are covering the range, but
not with excessive duplication.
RAC will probably have a funky old scope with a sign advertising the
Telescope Amnesty opportunity and a sign up sheet to gauge interest.
