ImageJ (a Java-based descendant of NIH Image) works on both PC and MACs.  It is also a free software with a wealth of end-user created "plug-ins" that allows a vast number of sophisticated processing procedures.

I have not used it for astrophotography, and having missed the last CHAOS meeting, am not keenly aware of all that is requried for astrophotography processing.  However for the processing of microscopy images (i hypothesise quite similar to astrophotograpy processing) it offers a very viable user-friendly alternative to photoshop.  I have both and rarely use photoshop for microscopy image processing.
