OK, it's about to become August and we'll start to anticipate the next CHAOS
meeting so I'd better get the minutes out for the July meeting. CHAOS's
friend in secondary education, *Howard Lineberger of Durham* *Academy*, has
organized presentations for summer CHAOS meetings for the past several
years. He and *Sam* *Fuerst of Northern Durham High School* are
co-directors of the *Mars Outreach for NC Students* (know as MONS only to
Jayme and no one else) which is a NASA-funded program to involve high
school students in studying and interpreting data from the Mars Orbiter and
other Mars missions. In fact, students can suggest certain areas of Mars on
which to focus cameras and other devices to collect specific data to test
various hypotheses about the history of Mars geology including the presence
of water in different epochs of Martian history. * Michael Jones*, a rising
senior at the *NC School of Math and Science*, presented results from a
spectroscopic study of "*Martian mud"* that indicated that water was indeed
present during the formation of certain geologic features. Did I get that
right, guys? Several in the audience including me said WE weren't doing
stuff like that in high school! It's great to see what's happening with
this program from year to year but Howard says that NASA is feeling funding
pressures like everyone else ("We *fixed your space telescope* you ingrates!
Now you're asking for *more *..."). So if you have time to write or call
your Congressman or Senator or even consider donating to this program
yourself, please let Howard know. We hope he'll be back next year with more
student presentations of new Mars science. Walter
