And as I pressed "send" on the last post ... I remembered I had 
forgotten to encourage people to get out and observe Mars themselves!

The opposition happens on 1/29 ... and the closest approach of Mars is 
on the night of the 27th, which is when the moon will be full.  I 
realize most of you don't get the telescopes out on the weekends with 
the full moon ... but I recommend getting out between now and the end of 
the month and taking a look at Mars.  It really is nice!   Check the 
Clear Sky Clock, pick a night when the seeing is best, and get out and 
observe!
