Greetingsl
Our March 9th meeting is less than a week away. Our speaker this month is Mark Norris a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the
Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at UNC -Chapel Hill. Mark will be talking about some recent work they are doing here at UNC
trying to work out the exact nature of Ultra-Compact Dwarfs.
UCDs are a strange type of stellar system with properties somewhere between globular clusters and dwarf galaxies.
At present there are two popular explanations of what UCDs are: either they are just very large globular clusters unlike
any found in the Milky Way, or, they could be the remains of dwarf galaxies which have been torn apart by larger galaxies.
Their recent work helps shed some light on these odd objects, as well as the formation of larger galaxies such as the
Milky Way.
We will also be talking about CHAOS and the Night Sky Network. Tony Rice will give a little talk on what that means for you.
Come on and check out your club if you're a member or if you just want to check out the club because your interested in astronomy.
We meet at Carol Woods Retirement Community on Weaver Dairy Rd. The meeting begins at 7:00pm in the Assembly Hall.
