Compressed air from a can is probably okay in short blasts. Shake it up
well and be careful not to blast it so long that the liquid propellant comes
out .

The instructions you read online are very conservative as Ned pointed out
but if you keep a couple things in mind you'll be fine:

   - touch the mirror only with liquids for a first pass of cleaning
   - never touch the mirror with your fingers, even the cleanest hands have
   oils
   - use only distilled water to help prevent spotting
   - air dry only. dont even try to speed it up with a fan, you'll end up
with a dirtier mirror than you started with.
   - keep the screws you remove in a safe place

Also keep in mind that while you want to take care not to damage the mirror
and clean it as well as possible. Its just a mirror and can be replaced
with some effort. That being said, that effort may be a bit more
significant since Meade probably doesn't carry parts for a scope this old.
