Actually, when you zoom this image and pan it around, there's lots of  
itty-bitty galaxies scattered around, including two bracketed by the  
left-hand diffraction spikes, and one impaled on the upper-right-hand  
spike.

However, my (1987) edition of Sky Atlas 2000 doesn't show any galaxies  
at all in that vicinity, so they're almost certainly not NGC  
objects.   Maybe somebody with a deeper reference can help.  The FAQ  
for the DSS may also shed some light:

giving you a (tedious) way to find something about the LM of the plate  
the image was taken from.
