Hello Fellow CHAOS members. I hope this email finds you all well.
Our February meeting is next Tuesday Feb. 8th. We have a return speaker, Dr.
Barbara Becker. She is returning to continue her
talk about the Huggins family. As you know, Barbara's last talk was about
William Huggins, who is considered the father of Spectroscopy.
This month Barbara is returning to talk about is wife and assistant Margaret
Huggins.
Dispelling the Myth of the "Able Assistant": Margaret Huggins and the Work
of the Tulse Hill Observatory
Accounts of the work of English amateur astronomer William Huggins (1
824-1910 <callto:+1824-1910>) always mention that he was assisted in his
research by his wife, the former Margaret Lindsay Murray
(1848-1915<callto:+1848-1915>).
Until now, descriptions of the nature and value of her contributions have
been based on information gleaned from the Hugginses' published scientific
papers. But new information uncovered in their observatory notebooks and
correspondence shows that Margaret was more than an able assistant,
amanuensis and illustrator. Her very presence and expertise not only
strengthened but also shaped the research agenda of the Tulse Hill
observatory. She and her husband worked together as complementary
collaborative partners.
So clear your calendar and join your fellow CHAOS members for a lesson in
historical astronomy.
We also have information of a CHAOS outing in March and April up in southern
Virginia. On the Dark sky map, this park is in the BLUE.
I'm excited about it.
Clear skies!
Jayme Hanzak
