Greetings everyone,

Our long anticipated meeting with Amanda Moffett is tomorrow.

We'll discuss Staunton River State Park and up and coming events.

May is the month for Astronomy Days this year.

As I said above, Amanda Moffett from the UNC Physics Department will be our guest speaker.

Here is a synopsis of her talk

Not So Red and Dead: Elliptical and Lenticular Galaxies Reborn as Spirals?

Both galaxy formation theory and recent observations suggest that some
merger-formed elliptical and lenticular (E and S0) galaxies may be
able to transform their appearances over time by (re)growing spiral
disks. However, the prevalence of this disk regrowth process is not
yet well determined, and answers to three key questions are still
being sought: How often does it occur? Under what circumstances does
it occur? How much growth is possible? I will discuss results bearing
on all three questions, with particular emphasis on
recently-discovered XUV (extended ultraviolet) disks around E/S0s,
representing previously-undetected outer-disk star formation.

Our meeting starts at 7pm. We meet at the Carol Woods Retirement Community

on Weaver Dairy Rd. In Chapel Hill.

We'll see you there.
