Very good turnout. Michael F., Jason, Mark C., Alexey, Tony Garcia and his
girlfriend Carolyn, Phil Suitt, John Miller, Randy V., Mark South, and me.
Beth and her nephew came a bit later.
It was great having so many folks show....and so many with telescopes. And
it was a very clear night especially for July! We have had more than an
average number of great clear summer nights this year.
I spent quite a bit of time looking at some old favorites, and we did have
visitors from the campground. I know that everyone really helped out
showing the sites to these folks so that is much appreciated. I always feel
like a great service is done when we introduce someone to the heavens
through a telescope. A lot of people would never have that opportunity if
it weren't for us being willing to do this. I know that Robert Nielsen has
commented before about this being another part of nature like the mountains
or the trials or the water. It's just that for a lot of people is
inaccessible, or so they believe. It's nice to nix that notion.
After midnight it was very dark overhead, and one of the highlights for me,
at the suggestion of John Miller, was the Bubble Nebula in Cas. It was very
difficult..but we confirmed it against Kepple's description in his great
book "Night Sky Observer's Guide". Not bright...almost undetectable, but
there.
As usual, the Veil was a treat.
We saw the "Little Gem" through Tony's scopes, and also enjoyed looking at a
number of objects through both Alexey's and Michael Fullbright's
instruments.
How great to compare views and look at different objects through varied
telescopes.
Thanks everyone for coming! allen
