We went to Mt St Helens in the summer of '84 as part of a family trip.
There were still a lot of areas back then that you couldn't get access
too because it was still so dangerous: piles of timber, mud that was
still not dried and still shifting.

The place really did look like what I imagined the lunar surface would
be: grey for as far as you could see.
It was quite sobering.
