[Chaos-l] Tonight

We started out iffy but it actually improved as the night progressed. Tony and I were inundated with folks from the campground, and we ended up just throwing the scopes on whatever we could think of to show people something. At that time Jupiter wasn’t good, as the seeing was as the CSC predicted. Also lots of high clouds. But gradually the conditions improved. We had several contingents of people from the campground, and with each group Jupiter looked better.

It also cleared up considerably, and the seeing also improved, the exact opposite of what should have happened according to the CSC. That is twice in the last three days that it has been dead wrong. I knew the seeing couldn’t be any worse that Thursday (when the CSC predicted great seeing)…and it was much better here than we thought it would be.

Looked at Uranus and Neptune, and also Tony thought of some interesting star clusters and doubles. We made the most of it and I think the folks in the campground appreciated it. I would estimate we had at least 30-35 people over the course of the evening.

Thanks to Tony and Carolyn for coming. It was Tony’s birthday and they shared Carolyn’s excellent chocolate espresso cake…really good! Thanks guys. Didn’t get the fire lit until after 1000pm because we were so busy!

Glad we did get out because the weather doesn’t look so good the next few days! allen

Hope you all had better conditions than I did in my yard! Seeing was awful (at least around 9-10pm when I was looking at Jupiter) and I had a continual stream of somewhat thick high clouds that at times blocked out 50+% of my sky. On the plus side, always had somewhere in the sky to look and the dew wasn't as bad as the last few times I got out. Plus, the rings around the moon were spectacular at times. I was primarily doing some spectroscopy, so I can make the best of less than perfect conditions. Had an enjoyable and quiet evening.

We'll be there!!

We'll probably be there before sunset, setup camp, and grill some food. Since it also happens to be my birthday Ill bring left over cake for anyone that shows up ( cinnamon, expresso chocolate cake )

I am going to try to set up tonight at Medoc, hoping for better seeing that Thursday. The CSC on seeing isn’t great, but it was supposed to be excellent Thursday and it was awful. So I am hoping it’s wrong again!

Either way, I plan to bring a little wood and have a fire at the fireplace. Will set up the scope for a while as I am still trying to get my new computer setup refined. Probably will be refractor night again. The moon Is of course up so that will be a target too, as well as Jupiter of course.

Will just play it all by ear, or by the skies, but I may hike a bit, so should be there relatively early.

Come join us if you want to have an excuse to enjoy the nice weather! The weather doesn’t look so good after tomorrow with rains on the way for a few days……..another reason I would like to get out. allen
