About Col. Al Worden

A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the University of
Michigan, Alfred Worden served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot and a flight
instructor. He was one of 19 astronauts chosen by NASA in 1966 and
participated in training at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. He
served as a member of the Apollo 9 astronaut support crew and as backup CMP
for Apollo 12 before flying on the Apollo 15 mission in 1971. During that
mission, Col. Worden established a record for the most-distant-from-Earth
EVA (extravehicular activity, or "space walk") ever completed by a human,
spending 38 minutes outside the Command Module. That record still stands
today.

Col. Worden served as senior aerospace scientist for NASA's Ames Research
Center before retiring from active duty in 1975. He continued his career
with leadership positions with several companies within the aerospace and
aviation industries. The author of three books, Col. Worden has served as
chair of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation board of directors. In 2009,
NASA honored Col. Worden with the Ambassador of Exploration Award.
