These are awesome shots Mark. It almost looks like the grayish clouds are passing over the red spot. Am I imagining that?

I may try if I get time.. since I have not been tracking it.. I will ask.. what time is it set to pass over.. I have read it will be very dim and hard to see.

I did get some excellent views of Jupiter last night and some good images too. At 485X using the 3.7mm Ethos, at the times of steady seeing, I could easily make out detail on Ganymede and hints of detail on Callisto. And the planet was full of detail...See the images attached.

You going to try to see it tonight?  Since this is the annual CHAOS meeting where we setup our scopes and let the residents of Carol Woods look at things, I thought I would try ... although I don't expect I'll see much ...

I just plotted the path on Sky Safari......i found the asteroid with a
search and then centered.  Then I hit time forward.  It was really really
NEAT to see it track across the display, try it if you have Sky Safari Plus
or Pro.

I updated my minor body data while ago also.  allen

Well, a few things are going to make it difficult:

1) Tomorrow night is the Carol Woods observing session ... not a dark site
2) The moon is pretty close to full (97% illuminated)
3) While S&T says it is mag 11, some say it is "coal black"
4) Various reports say the ephemera will change slightly as it passes

But the Clear Sky Clock is predicting good conditions, so we'll just have to
take a shot.  I'm planning on dragging The Mistress out tomorrow to the
meeting ...

This is the closest approach of an asteroid since the 70's and there

shouldn't be another like it for 20+ years.  Sky and Telescope has

some good info on spotting it.  It's a mag 11.1 so it's reachable at a

dark site.
