Just as a heads up, every year I post an ad on CraigsList about giving a telescope as gift. I've also published this as an article on the RAC web site:

Basically the advice is to do your homework as the last thing you want to have happen is for that excitement the child has Christmas morning to turn into frustration and disappoint the first time the try to use the scope.
