We were able to see some nice views…….Jim Palermo always has something on his mind for us to observe that I haven’t seen. We looked at IC418…an interesting planetary with a “bubble gum” color as Jim put it. Also NGC 1999 a reflection nebula that showed some obvious structure……..and was actually not symmetrical. It is a “Herbig Haro object, with jets from stars punching a hole in the gas surrounding the stars. Very interesting…leave it to Jim to have something interesting and different.
The clouds did show up en masse a bit later that they did for you. I was home by 1145pm, and was the last to leave. allen

Mark,
I think it depends on how you feel. For some reason, the 1.5 hour drive back from Medoc to Chapel Hill is fine for me ... as long as I leave before 2 AM. But I can see how it could be dangerous for others. I usually take the "back roads" (Medoc->Louisburg->Franklinton->Creedmoor->Durham->Chapel Hill) since those roads make me pay attention. I think if I tried driving back on an Interstate, it might be different.
I hope you had a good first time out at the park. We were surprised at the Morehead observing session when the clouds showed up ... and then the visitors were surprised again when it cleared. Then when I got home, more clouds! What is going on around here? None of this was on the CSC ...

Being new to the group, and very unfamiliar with Medoc, am I correct in assuming this is an overnight camping venture as opposed to a late night session?
Thanks,

I am going to Medoc late this afternoon to setup. It has been so long since the forecast was really good that I don’t know what to do with myself.
CSC shows soso seeing, and there is a period there where the transparency looks a bit iffy, but it is supposed to be clear.
Would like to take part in the outreach at Jordan Lake, but this time I am going to be a little selfish and take advantage of being able to see some targets myself.
Looks like several folks have already said they will come, so if anyone else wants to get out please join us. We will have a fire in the fireplace and good company … allen
