The Department of Mathematics at NC State University is hosting a
public lecture, titled *Mathematics and the Mystery of Dark Matter*,
by Dr. Donald Saari, Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and
Economics at the University of California, Irvine.

Abstract: Even after spending billions of dollars on experiments, we
have not been able to find that mysterious thing hiding in the heavens
called "dark matter." Sounds ominous! But what is it? Why do we
believe it is important? As described in this expository lecture,
mathematics is shedding significant new light on dark matter.

This lecture is the first in an annual series honoring the late
Kwangil Koh, a former faculty member in the department. The goal of
the Kwangil Koh Lecture on Mathematics in Our Time is to communicate
to the general public the importance of mathematics and its impact on
science, technology and society.

When:     Monday, April 16 (Reception at 4 p.m.; Lecture at 4:30 p.m.)

Where:     SAS Hall on NC State's North Campus

Cost:     This event is FREE and open to the public
