The filter might just work; however, I have never used anything but approved solar filters to protect my equipment and my eyes!  Here's a resource to explore:

I have found the solar film used for my small telescopes works really well on eclipses with a DSLR.  Just be careful to rig up a field device that fits firmly over your lens so during focusing b/w f/stop bracketing you don't accidentally knock off the filter mid-eclipse!

Not sure what you captured - may have been an aurora but could also have been LP bouncing around from distant clouds, a volume of polluted air high in silicates or similarly reflective particles, high-altitude rain/ice/snow?  The SWPC site, going back to Feb 9, doesn't show auroras visible this far south though.  Here is a link to the solar activity summary
