Something else that's kind of cool about that building is the residence section upstairs adjacent the telescope. I had an opportunity to see it once while employed by UNC. Many stars, dignitaries and other VIP stay there when visiting Chapel Hill. I understand it was a favorite of Charles Kuralt and Andy Griffith. It's quite a posh place decorated with original artwork and things like expensive Chinese pottery and such. And of course, it has it's complement of caretakers who work there full time. A special elevator around back provides access with a box into which one must enter the password to get in. Parking is provided there to and for those familiar with the campus, it's the narrow street which comes in off Cameron beside the Arboretum. Top of the hill and top of many other things it is indeed! I wouldn't miss this opportunity, I'll see you all there as well. Phil

When we went to the planetarium as schoolkids we all figured that those big domes on top of the building were like those at Palomar and Mt Wilson, then as college students we thought the dome was the planetarium dome itself poking through the roof. We were right as little kids! If you haven't been on top of the building in the observatory you should come check it out. It's the true "Top of the Hill." See you there! Walter
