Indeed it was a night specifically setup for galaxies ... they really did look great, as did many nebulae (such as the Orion Nebula Tony mentioned). DSOs were great, planets not so much. Which was a shame, because by the end of the evening, we got to see Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn (and I guess we could have seen Neptune and Uranus if we had tried). I don't remember a night were I've seen four planets. I think we will be able to see Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn at the upcoming Staunton River Star Party ...
Yes, the "tough" galaxy that your scope showed and mine didn't was NGC 2280 ... in Canis Major. It was pretty tough to see, but definitely there. Seems odd that you can see galaxies right through an arm of the Milky Way, but I guess you can because there were other smaller galaxies nearby.
I also liked beta Monocerotis - a triple star where each of the stars looks identical - same color, same brightness. Most of the time, double stars show some difference; this didn't.
Well, now that we have had the first really good night of observing this year, I hope there are many more!

I will have to get home by 100am or maybe a little earlier, but with this forecast I feel like I should try and take it in for a while.
