[Chaos-l] Chaos-l Digest, Vol 87, Issue 21

Terry,

The Horsehead unfiltered? Never. Perhaps if you went to New Mexico somewhere ... but I actually have trouble seeing it in a friend's 20" Obsession with a filter. And it is really, really hard in my 12" Cassegrain.

The trick, I've learned, is what is called "exit pupil". You can have a really big scope, and use the wrong eyepiece and never see it. What you want is to get the maximum amount of light into your pupil, which for people my age is around 5mm (younger folks can get all the way to 7mm I believe). The exit pupil is calculated by dividing the focal length of the eyepiece by the f/ratio of the scope. Since my big scope is an f/10, I need at least a 50mm eyepiece. For an f/7 scope, you would need at least a 35mm eyepiece. And for the really fast f/3.x scopes, you can get all the way down to 15-17mm eyepieces.

Since it is no faint, you need to get the maximum amount of light into your eye. Choose the right eyepiece!
