Hi, all -

I've just learned that -- weather permitting -- viewing of the transit on the Morehead Observatory 4th floor deck will be possible quite a bit past 8 p.m. ...to ~8:20.

There's still space for a few more scopes to set up on the deck (and by the sundial/ parking lot) for those who would enjoy providing views and interpretation for the public -- please let me and Mickey Jo Sorrell (sorrell at email.unc.edu) know very soon, if you're interested.

Based on the number of phone calls to Morehead today, we are expecting lots of people tomorrow! http://www.moreheadplanetarium.org/

Amy

p.s. To see the view tomorrow from a webcam on the Morehead scope, go to: http://skynet.unc.edu/tov/ and look at the left side of the page (it's just in testing mode now)

Hi, Doug -

We'll ask volunteers to set up scopes in one of two places:

1) In front of our building -- at the eastern end of the sundial or eastern sidewalk of parking lot.
Sight lines permit viewing till 7 or 7:30 p.m. depending on exact placement of the scope. Volunteers needing to leave <8 p.m. will be asked to set up here.

2) 4th floor observing deck.
Viewing possible till 8 p.m. Even from this vantage point, there are too many tall trees downtown to permit viewing all the way to 8:30 sunset.

Amy,
Where would you place the scopes and would the astronomers have visibility until the ~8:28PM sunset?

Regards,
Doug
RAC Co-chairman

Dear CHAOS and RAC members,

Hi, two things about the transit of Venus:

1) Are you, or someone you know, still looking for a place to view the transit of Venus on June 5?

We would love to have you—and your friends and families—join us at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center:
250 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill (please note: This is at our building--we will not be at Jordan Lake.)
  Tuesday, June 5, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Rain or shine, since most activities are not weather dependent.
  FREE.

In addition to safe solar viewing (via telescopes, webcam/internet, and “eclipse glasses”), we’ll have:
 - live planetarium shows about the transit, every half hour
 - science presentations by NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassadors Mike Malaska and Tony Rice
 - tours of Morehead Observatory
 - hands-on activity stations (make a sundial, take a planet walk, design a sun mask, create a planet, participate in a planet-hunting citizen science project, draw your changing shadow, experiment with UV beads, and more).

More info here:
http://www.moreheadplanetarium.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=news_item&id=665

2) A big THANK YOU to the CHAOS and RAC members who are volunteering with the Morehead event! So far, I've got on my list that these folks are bringing telescopes:
  Bill Cramer (sp?)
  Mark Montazer
  Robert Nielsen
  Jack Roach
  (maybe?) Phil Suitt

I may be forgetting someone(s)…please let me know if I did.

And if anyone else has a solar telescope, or can outfit your scope with a proper solar filter, and you would like to volunteer to help the Morehead public outreach event, please contact me and Mickey Jo Sorrell (sorrell at email.unc.edu<mailto:sorrell at email.unc.edu>).

We’ll ask you to set up either outside the building (sight lines permit viewing till 7-7:30 p.m.) or on the 4th floor observing deck (viewing possible as late as 8 p.m. – all of this weather permitting of course). We’ll provide parking coupons for telescope volunteers so that you can exit the Morehead lot without paying.

Thanks, and hope to see you on June 5th!
