You can imagine what it was like when two Hurricanes put the lights out years ago in this area.  First Hurricane Fran and then Floyd.  Floyd had things closed at Medoc for months.  But they still let us go there to observe.  The first week after the storm came through we had to travel a round about way to get to Medoc as the bridge was out that I normally used.  

 

But it was dark those first two or three nights.  It was amazing.  After a tropical system goes through the sky is usually clear, and to have the lights out was something.

 

But it caused a lot of damage and heartache so I don’t wish that on anyone.

 

But it was nice to see the skies like folks must have seen it years ago.  You are right Tony…it must have been something.

I can make out the lagoon nebula through my binoculars.  but I admit I have not tried that in town like this before so I don't have a good comparison.   

 

either way - knowing the sky when the power is out is completely awesome. 

 

Very quickly it is obvious that pre industrial people must have spent tons more time star gazing then modern people.  It's a very obvious past time on nights like this, even to non astronomy types.
