[Chaos-l] Target

Well I was able to get out and roll the roof off my observatory to see some deep sky objects finally. I was playing with some
surveillance camera a friend gave me. I cranked the gain up trying to catch some meteors and it  w orked fairly well. I caught a flurry at
around 11:23 last night.

What really boggles my mind is that I showed my wife a satellite view of the clouds at 7:30.  T hey were covering the entire state of NC.
I walked outside at 8:30 and I could see the moon with a slight halo around it and the sky was clear. The night was good up until
midnight when I went inside. The viewing was still good, I just had to get some sleep for work.

I'm very greatful  for the clear skies. The brain dead television is getting to me. Yes, I'm talking of the industry in which I work.

Maybe clear skies tonight,

Jayme

You can imagine what it was like when two Hurricanes put the lights out years ago in this area.  First Hurricane Fran and then Floyd.  Floyd had things closed at Medoc for months.  But they still let us go there to observe.  The first week after the storm came through we had to travel a round about way to get to Medoc as the bridge was out that I normally used.

But it was dark those first two or three nights.  It was amazing.  After a tropical system goes through the sky is usually clear, and to have the lights out was something.

But it caused a lot of damage and heartache so I don’t wish that on anyone.

But it was nice to see the skies like folks must have seen it years ago.  You are right Tony…it must have been something.

I can make out the lagoon nebula through my binoculars.  but I admit I have not tried that in town like this before so I don't have a good comparison.

either way - knowing the sky when the power is out is completely awesome.

Very quickly it is obvious that pre industrial people must have spent tons more time star gazing then modern people.  It's a very obvious past time on nights like this, even to non astronomy types.

I can't believe it, the clouds have left and I'm going outside. There isn't a cloud in the sky.

I'm not kidding.

Yipee!!!!!!

Yep ... I'm getting tired of WRAL weather using the same icon for the weather every day ... over and over - sun with storm cloud over it with lightning flashes.   When will it end?!?

We might need to go to burnt offerings or a rubber chicken ...

I'm a pretty straight science type but I was also raised around Navajo culture in New Mexico and I kind of think you need some kind of purification sage ceremony because the weather does seem to follow you around!

Jayme, one of these days I'm going to smudge you with a campfire(bonfire?) of sage!

I'm starting to feel like I got a target painted on my forehead.
Actually, I was concerned, it hadn't rained in 6 hours.
