Thank you to Tony, Alexey, and Mickey, who all responded to my query.
I'm told that if the Chapel Hill News decides to write anything about the sighting, it is expected to run in this Sunday's paper.
Amy

Oh, I should add, they have small engines and would be silent or nearly so and an operator would have to have some kind of LED marker lights on the wings and nose or tail in order to have enough visual clues to land it at night. aka three lights forming a triangle.

Yes, i think this is a good theory, we have a few meteorite showers lately and like I said before, a visual trick with a depth perception issue thrown in and one could interpret any number of things.
I also wouldn't discount someone flying a small remote airplane at night, those have become a lot more popular and I have seen people flying them near Carrboro. People are mounting cameras and taking video of fly overs they do with them and it wouldn't surprise me if people were doing that at night to tape city lights.
Sounds to me like a meteorite that split into 3 pieces... he saw 3 points of light moving together and mentally filled in a black triangle in between.
Alexey
