Subject: 12/6 Carolina Science Cafe: The End of the World!

Greetings, Cafe Enthusiasts!

Please spread the word about our last Carolina Science Cafe of the year at Back Bar at Top of the Hill. It's a good one! And, as always, free appetizers (while they last...) courtesy of our gracious sponsors at Sigma Xi. See you on Thursday, 12/6! Jonathan

The Doomsday Series:
APOPHIS AND FRIENDS: PREDICTING FUTURE EARTH IMPACTS
Dr. Chris Clemens
Thursday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m.
Back Bar at Top of the Hill
Downtown Chapel Hill

As we approach Dec. 21, 2012 (touted as the "end of the world" based on one interpretation of the Maya calendar), Carolina Science Cafe concludes the year with a series of special topics based on real, not specious, potential threats to life as we know it.

[Dr. Chris Clemens]
Ever hear of Apophis? It's a near-Earth asteroid that has generated some publicity about possibilities that it could collide with Earth. But how accurate is that publicity? In the last of three "Doomsday Series" presentations, Dr. Chris Clemens takes us through the science behind predicting the probability of impacts. Is there really a danger to Earth from Apophis or other asteroids?

Dr. Clemens is professor of astrophysics and chairman of physics and astronomy at UNC, where he has served since 1998. He is also director of the Abrham Goodman Laboratory for Astronomical Instrumentation, on the board of directors for SALT (Southern African Large Telescope) and a cofounder of MegaWatt Solar. This year, he received the 2012 Faculty Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring of the UNC Graduate School. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma and his doctorate from the University of Texas, Austin, serving as a Hubble Fellow at Iowa State University and completing post-doc work at the California Institute of Technology.
