Yeah i hear you there, I left probably 50% of the dust on the mirror. I
used a big squeeze toy like camera blower to get the big stuff off which is
great. There were a couple of large "objects" that have been driving me
nuts for months, a couple of millimeter sized lint bits and one seemed to
be a bit of plastic.
Cleaning out/blowing the inside of the tube was especially great, very
satisfying to get dust and debris out before it landed on the mirror. The
inside coating or texture of the tube(levy mak-newt) has a light baffling
quality which also makes it a bit of a dust catcher(good). The mirror
clearly has a coating of some kind ( light reflection?) so I'm attempting
to avoid cleaning it with anything more than air.
speaking of scope maintenance and non-normal - I am becoming a believer in
star drive style screws. It seems to me that small hex/allen wrench style
screws or phillips, tend to strip too easily. But the star drive heads
never strip ( good edge grip ).
if one was building something small, it's something to consider.
Especially if the screw threads (probably) are the same as you would get
when using a tapping tool to make your own threaded hole. Probably just a
matter of hole diameter - not threads. But also not something I've fooled
with yet.
Now that I've said all this I'm consider tapping some holes into my dew
shield for adding screws to hold it on. Right now it just uses friction
which doesn't work well. That or bridge it with velcro.
