I think probably what happened is that I first saw jupiter's 
moons with a small scope or binos in the 60's, and if it was 
binos, they were probably shaking, and almost no matter 
what, the moons would have looked straight. I would have 
said "of course" and thought nothing more about it. 
Presumably all my subsequent views of jupiter have been in 
small scopes where I haven't paid much attention to the 
moons and these confirmed my previous assumption. It wasn't 
till the conjunction the other week that I looked at the 
moons long enough (over about 90mins) to realise that "hey, 
this is a dog leg?!".

I've had this wrong for 55yrs now ;-(
